EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy is based on the natural human phenomenon of Adaptive Information Processing (AIP). Every time a memory is recalled, it is updated—just like a working document on a computer—when it is opened again, it may be changed and then saved again to the hard drive. Our brain continuously engages in this natural updating of information and natural problem-solving.

Sometimes when a traumatic incident occurs—the system may be overwhelmed—and unable to access the adaptive neural network, and this natural process gets interrupted. Eye movements or other forms of bi-lateral stimulation (such as “tapping” or “walking through”) seem to activate the problem-solving process.

This therapy can help with both the healing of psychological pain and physical discomfort related to trauma, depression, anxiety, self-worth issues, and other life events. It is used to effectively treat both upsetting past events and present life conditions. Francine Shapiro, Ph.D., developed EMDR in 1987, and to date over 200,000 mental health therapists in 52 countries have been trained. Your therapist has been trained by an EMDRIA Approved Trainer in EMDR Therapy.

EMDR Therapy will help you to desensitize one or more of the following: the image of the event, the negative cognition (belief) about yourself, distressing emotions which may be causing physical discomfort related to the memory.
